The Congregation of the Resurrection is an international religious community within the Roman Catholic Church, serving in parishes, schools, and various church institutions across fifteen countries around the world. The Congregation is administratively divided into three provinces (Canada, the United States of America, and Poland) and one region (South America). The General Curia is based in Rome. As consecrated religious, we profess the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Through our vows, we completely dedicate and consecrate ourselves to the Risen Christ in religious life. This act involves a declaration of faith, by which we respond to God’s call for total self-giving to God, the Church, and the Congregation with all our talents, capacities, and strength (cf. Constitutions of the Congregation of the Resurrection, § 13). We live out our religious vocation in the Congregation of the Resurrection as priests, religious brothers, and permanent deacons. Our religious community was founded in Paris, France, on February 17, 1836, under the leadership of Bogdan Jański. It emerged from the environment of the Great Emigration following the November Uprising of 1830 and reflected its spiritual needs. Jański became a leading lay apostle among Polish emigrants in France. His work was so fruitful and enduring that it led many people to a renewal of religious life and to the dedication of themselves to God and neighbor.
After the death of Bogdan Jański on July 2, 1840, his disciples, under the guidance of Piotr Semenenko and Hieronim Kajsiewicz, Co-founders of the Congregation, continued to develop the Founder’s ideas and lived in community. On Easter Sunday, March 27, 1842, together with five other brothers, they professed their first religious vows in the catacombs of St. Sebastian in Rome. They were inspired to dedicate themselves to the Risen Savior and to call themselves the “Brothers of the Resurrection.”
"As members of a Congregation dedicated to the renewal of society, through a life marked by the Paschal Mystery, you proclaim with great zeal the presence of the Savior among people today and at all times. The world needs your witness and apostolic fervor. I encourage you to remain faithful to your commitment and assure you of my remembrance in prayer."
John Paul II, Rome, January 4, 1987
