The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Sulisławice is one of the most renowned pilgrimage sites in the Diocese of Sandomierz. The small-sized painting (21.5 x 22 cm), painted on both sides of a wooden board in the second half of the 15th century, depicts Christ in the mystical winepress with His sorrowful Mother standing beside Him. Jesus shows His pierced hands, while Mary attempts to staunch the blood flowing from the wounded side of her Son. On the reverse, the Face of the suffering Lord is depicted on the veil of Saint Veronica.
The image was originally kept in the old Romanesque church. In 1888 it was transferred to the newly built large Neo-Gothic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The devotion to the image of Our Lady of Sorrows began in the 17th century. It was confirmed by a decree of Bishop Andrzej Trzebicki, after an investigation into the miraculous events and graces obtained through the painting. Its coronation was carried out in 1913 by the Ordinary of Sandomierz, Bishop Marian Ryx, and its re-coronation in 1991 by Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk, using crowns blessed by John Paul II.
Our Lady of Sorrows of Sulisławice is the Patroness of the Polish Province of the Resurrectionists, who since 1951 have been the custodians of this unique holy place in the land of Sandomierz.
