Jubilee at Hedwig

On Sunday, October 20th, the parish community of St. Hedwig of Silesia celebrated the 125th anniversary of the parish. The solemn liturgy was presided over and the sermon was delivered by Cardinal Francis George OMI. Also participating in the Mass were Bishop Alberto Rojas, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, Fr. Bernard Hylla CR, Superior General of the Resurrectionists, Fr. Gene Szarek CR, Provincial Superior of the USA, Fr. Tomasz Wojciechowski CR, the parish pastor, and his six predecessors. The parish was founded in 1888 by Fr. Wincenty Barzyński CR for Polish families living on the outskirts of St. Stanislaus Kostka's parish. In 1889, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth arrived at the parish and opened a school. The parish quickly grew and by 1894 it already had 1,300 families. Currently, the parish conducts pastoral care in three languages: English, Polish, and Spanish. There is also a vibrant community of Filipino Catholics in the parish.
