Our Holy Patrons
Saint JosephSpouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Guardian of Jesus, and Patron of the Catholic Church.
Regarding the details of Saint Joseph's life, we must rely on what the Gospels tell us, which do not devote much attention to him (only 26 verses). Although the apocryphal texts vividly depict Joseph’s life, family, marriage, work, and death, they contain too many legends to be treated as historically reliable.
Joseph came from the lineage of King David, as shown by St. Matthew in the genealogy of Joseph’s ancestors. Despite his noble heritage, Joseph possessed no wealth. He earned his living as a carpenter. Engaged to Mary, Joseph was confronted with the mystery of the miraculous conception. Though not the biological father of Christ, he was legally considered His father under Jewish law as the lawful husband of Mary. Thus, although Mary gave birth to Jesus as a virgin, Joseph was seen as Jesus' father by law and society. When he learned of Mary's pregnancy and knew it wasn't his child, he intended to withdraw quietly to avoid disgracing her. But after an angel revealed the truth to him, he took Mary into his home in Nazareth (Mt 1–2; 13:55; Lk 1–2). Obeying the census decree, he traveled with her to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. After naming the Child and presenting Him at the temple, he fled to Egypt with Mary and Jesus to escape persecution. After Herod's death, they returned to Nazareth. Joseph’s last appearance in the Scriptures is during the pilgrimage to Jerusalem with the twelve-year-old Jesus. He is absent when Jesus begins His ministry, which suggests he had already died. He likely experienced the most beautiful death imaginable, with Jesus and Mary by his side. Tradition has therefore named him the patron of a good death.
Iconography often depicts Joseph as an elderly man. In reality, he was likely a young man in the prime of his life. Christian art has preserved thousands of representations of Joseph in sculpture and painting. Church Fathers and writers emphasize that Divine Providence chose a man of extraordinary virtue to live so closely with Jesus and Mary. For this reason, the Church rightly places St. Joseph at the head of all saints and honors him prominently in hagiography.
Prayer to Saint Joseph
O Saint Joseph, reputed Father and Guardian of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, most beloved Spouse of His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary! I, N.N., choose you today and for all the days of my life as my Patron, Father, and Protector, and I firmly resolve to always and everywhere proclaim and spread your glory and honor. I humbly beg you to accept me as your servant. Rescue me in all needs of soul and body, defend me from all visible and invisible enemies, keep me safe from all dangers, misfortunes, and evil occurrences. Especially at the hour of my death, come to my aid with your Immaculate Spouse, Mary, so that I may not perish, but attain eternal life and glorify God with you forever and ever. Amen.
Prayer to Saint Joseph, Patron of the Catholic Church
O most powerful Patriarch, Saint Joseph, Patron of the Catholic Church, who has always been invoked in times of tribulation and distress, turn your merciful eyes from the throne of your glory upon the Catholic world. Let your fatherly heart be moved at the sight of the Church – the spiritual Bride of Christ and His Vicar – persecuted by enemies. Through the sorrows you suffered on earth, comfort our Pope, protect him, and intercede for him before the Giver of peace and love, so that after overcoming all trials and errors, the whole Church may serve the Most High God in full freedom. Amen.
Pope John XXIII’s Prayer for Humility
O Saint Joseph, guardian of Jesus, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who passed through life perfectly fulfilling your duties, supporting the Holy Family of Nazareth with the labor of your hands, kindly support those who – full of trust – turn to you!
You know their aspirations, their needs, their hopes; they come to you because they know they will find someone who understands and defends them.
You too experienced hardships, toil, and fatigue; but it was precisely through these efforts to ensure material well-being that your spirit attained the deepest peace and enjoyed unspeakable joy from living with the Son of God and Mary, His most beloved Mother, entrusted to you.
Let those under your protection understand that they are not alone in their work; may they learn to recognize Jesus beside them, to welcome Him with gratitude, and to guard Him faithfully, as you did. And obtain that in every family, in every factory, in every workshop where a Christian works, everything may be sanctified by love, patience, justice, and care for the good – so that the graces of heaven may abundantly descend. Amen.

Patron of the unemployed and job seekers, and of those who entrust themselves to Divine Providence.
Cajetan was born in the Italian city of Vicenza in 1480. He received a thorough education and held a doctorate in Roman and Church law. At the age of 36, he was ordained a priest. Even before his ordination, he visited the sick in hospitals and the poor in shelters, supporting them in their needs. As a priest, he continued this ministry with even greater zeal. Cajetan founded a new religious order called the Theatines. He had deep faith in Divine Providence. Throughout his life, he engaged in charitable works, founding, among other things, a pious bank to support the poor. During an epidemic, he ministered to the sick. In 1547, when civil war threatened in Naples, he offered his life to prevent bloodshed. His contemporaries believed that God accepted this sacrifice. He died in the odor of sanctity on August 7 of that year and was buried in Naples. Pope Clement X canonized him in 1673. The feast of Saint Cajetan, priest, is celebrated on August 7.

Prayer to Saint Cajetan for Help in Finding Work
Saint Cajetan, who during your life never passed indifferently by a person in need and always supported the poor, the sick, and all afflicted with hardship with great zeal, I also ask for your help in my distress. Please intercede for me with God and obtain for me the grace of finding a job. You, who saw human poverty up close so many times and tried with all your strength to help those affected, plead with the Lord God to keep me and my family from destitution. Help me to take the right steps and find suitable employment. Obtain for me the grace to meet good and compassionate people who will assist and support my efforts.
I also ask you to help me understand the deeper meaning of this experience I am now going through, so that through this cross – the cross of anxiety, uncertainty, and fear for the future – I may become more sensitive to the needs of others and more merciful to the poor and needy. May I know how to share what I have and always use material goods properly, never overestimating their value in my life.
Pray for me, that I may receive the grace I so earnestly ask for, and that with you I may gratefully praise God's mercy and share the joy of the gift received for His glory. Amen.
