Conference "Vatican – Poland – Bulgaria"

Sympozjum Sofia"Vatican – Poland – Bulgaria" Conference for 150th Anniversary

As part of the 150th Anniversary celebration of the CR Mission in Bulgaria, an academic conference entitled “Vatican – Poland – Bulgaria” was held on October 24, 2013 at the Polish embassy in Sofia. Initiated by the Polish Ambassador to Bulgaria, Mr. Leszek Hensel, the conference was co-sponsored by our Polish Province and the Institute of History of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, represented by its director, Prof. Ilia Todewa. 

     Eleven speakers presented papers at the conference, among them seven from the Bulgarian academy: from the Institute of History and the Balkan Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, from the National Library of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and from the Bulgarian Historical Archive. Four speakers representing the Polish environment were: prof. Lilla Moroz-Grzelak - Institute for Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Dr. Wojciech Jozwiak - Institute of Slavonic Philology, AMU, Prof. Fr. Stefan Koperek CR and Fr Lucjan Bartkowiak CR. The conference was considered a success, with more than 100 participants, including Apostolic Nuntio Archbishop Janusz Bolonek and the Uniate Exarch of Sofia, Bishop Christo Proykov.

   Our Fr. General Bernard Hylla also took part, as well as Provincial Fr. Wes Śpiewak and other province members, including our three current missionaries Frs. Roman Kotewicz, Jacek Wojcik and Michael Szlachciak. At the conference Fr. Roman presented the published memoires of Fr. Kupene Michalów about the work of the Resurrectionists in Malko Tarnovo. (ws)
